Piazza Senorina--Major Grunt

I did this a few years ago and sold it out of the back of my truck after it was rejected by the gallery representing me at the time--it didn't look like a Hatfield.  There is a lesson here somewhere--artist take heed!

I tried to carry my interest in the "inter-relationship of people" into a crowd scene.  I attempted to portray the moment when the business man was trying to sell something to a two year old--in this case a ride in a carriage at Piazza Senorina, Florence, Italy.  I worked off photographs I took at the site.  I was directing (yelling at) the carriage drivers to position themselves for my photos--it didn't work--I wonder why!  I used 16 different references for this painting.  I see in my FASO stats that this painting is number one in interest on my website.  I think the pigeons are the reason.

  1. Is the lesson 'not to let other people pasturize your art?' or 'If you want something done right, ya gotta do it yourself!'??
(the counter shows you almost at 1000 views! Congratulations Don! Your a hit!

  2. Stunning! It ceases to amaze me that a gallery would tell you a painting YOU made didn't look like you made it - what are they smoking?

  6. Hello? Hello? Are you no longer ruminating, or have you already covered all the profundities? We miss you. Give us a sign. Or another Bongart story.

  7. Thanks for asking: I am glad to say that my web thingy has generated some nice sales. Commission work has swallowed me up at the moment--it always makes me grouchy. Don't worry, I have many more stories and profundities to write about. Be back soon. Keep a light on for me. Don

  10. Don,
I wonder if it's the new Blogger template we're both using. My blog is stalling at times today and yours isn't bringing up any photos. I really like the new templates so hoping this only temporary.

  11. Don,
This is my second post to you today because it seems like the first one didn't go. It went something like this . . . .
"We're both using one of Blogger's new templates and today my blog is "acting up" plus none of your pictures are appearing for me on your blog. I really like the new templates and hope this is only temporary.

  12. Nora: If the computer doesn's heal, then get a Mac. I like the new templates also--I have not had trouble with them yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't a few glitches. I have some great new blogs to create so stay tuned. Thanks for your interest, Nora--hope we can meet sometime--Don

  13. Don,
I do have a Mac, running "Snow Leopard" and am really pleased with it. I think the problem was Google's Blogger yesterday. Everything was fine by last night and we know the new templates are in Beta.

While I have your attention, I would really like to know your opinion . . . or take on the national juried art exhibits.

    Many thanks,
    Nora

  14. Nora: I am going to enter everything in sight--you have to be thick skinned since you may be rejected by people to don't know their *^#$% from first base. I need to be threatened, challenged, intidmated, and fearful to do my best work--also paid a lot of money. Any goal--"out there", any obligation, any show is a gift from Heaven--it makes us try our hardest to do what we were summoned by God to do. I think once you get into the rythem of showing--it comes easy--if the thing doesn't cut it at the show--then sell it or give it away--I am now waiting to see my results from the Salon Show at Greenhouse Gallery in San Antonio--I don't expect to win, but I would not be surprised if I did. Blessings,Nora--hope this is a legitimate response.

  16. Don,
I knew you would have something good for me and I'm changing my way of thinking about the shows.
    Thanks again,

  18. Schedules have had me busy and I'm just now stumbling upon this post. Love the conversation between you and Nora. You should meet her Don. Take the trip to Naples and I'm certain she'll invite you in with open arms! You won't regret it. My only regret is I wouldn't be there to join you. How I'd love to sit and really get into "it" with the two of you!

Congrats on your good fortune of sales and commissions! We look up to you as a goal to reach. May not ever make it there, but its a wonderful stellar spot to aim for!

All the best, and Happy Easter.
